It’s an honest take on immigration and what if feels like to always be an outsider, to never really belong. It’s a study on parenthood and how having a child with a disability can affect you not only as a parent but as a person. Still, Miracle Creek is so much more than a murder mystery. But I still think the motivation, the way it happened, and the way circumstances lead to the final consequences could’ve been more believable, less predictable and overall more ‘Wow, I would never see this coming!’. Angie Kim is a master at making everyone seem suspicious.

I was never able to say ‘I’m absolutely sure it was that character’s fault’ because literally any of the main characters could have done it. Maybe it was just because I knew exactly who had done it and I guess that made me feel like it was slightly predictable. I was hooked from the start but there was also a point where I thought it could’ve been better (right before the ending). I wanted to finish it but I didn’t want it to end. I was reading it while I was having breakfast, I was reading it as I went down the stairs to the train, I was reading it in the bathroom, at work, before bed and when I should be dealing with, you know, responsibilities. Miracle Creek went from compulsory read to obsessive read really fast. I wasn’t expecting it to be everything it is, though. So when Miracle Creek popped up on my radar, it instantly became a compulsory read for me. Chapter by chapter, we shift alliances and gather evidence: Was it the careless mother of a patient? Was it the owners, hoping to cash in on a big insurance payment and send their daughter to college? Could it have been a protester, trying to prove the treatment isn’t safe?ĭrawing on the author’s own experiences as a Korean-American, former trial lawyer, and mother of a “miracle submarine” patient, this is a novel steeped in suspense and igniting discussion. But then the chamber explodes, two people die, and it’s clear the explosion wasn’t an accident.Ī powerful showdown unfolds as the story moves across characters who are all maybe keeping secrets, hiding betrayals. In a small town in Virginia, a group of people know each other because they’re part of a special treatment centre, a hyperbaric chamber that may cure a range of conditions from infertility to autism.
